GRAMMY-Award Winner John Berry Speaks At Grand Rounds February 11 Latest Speaker for Texas A&M College of Medicine’s Pete & Erin Huttlinger Series On Humanism In Medicine

TEMPLE, TX – January 20, 2022 – Country music artist and GRAMMY-Award winner John Berry has been tapped as the next guest speaker and performer for The Pete & Erin Huttlinger Series on Humanism in Medicine at Baylor Scott & White Health. The bi-annual event is sponsored by The Texas A&M College of Medicine’s chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS). Berry will speak virtually to the audience of physicians on February 11 at 12:00pm on the topic of “Find My Joy.” Berry recently battled throat cancer.

A GRAMMY award-winning country star, Berry has had 20 singles on the country charts, six of which went Top 5 as well as a #1 on the Billboard country charts. He has earned numerous Gold and Platinum albums. In 1993, Berry's co-written "A Mind Of Her Own" and "Kiss Me In The Car" introduced him to audiences. "Your Love Amazes Me," "What's In It For Me" and "You And Only You" thrust him to stardom in 1994. "Standing On The Edge Of Goodbye," "I Think About It All The Time," and "If I Had Any Pride Left At All" were all major hits that following year. "Your Love Amazes Me" earned Berry a 1995 GRAMMY nomination and in 1996, he scored his first GRAMMY win. Berry took "Change My Mind" into the country music Top 5 that same year. "She's Taken A Shine" became an even bigger hit in 1997. John’s weekly TV show, Songs & Stories with John Berry, aired for two years on Heartland Television and The Family Channel. In 2019, Berry was diagnosed with throat cancer, requiring 35 treatments combined of radiation and chemotherapy. After dealing with the treatments and the real possibility of losing his ability to sing, John’s resilience and recovery makes for an incredibly inspiring story.

This speaker/concert series was initiated by Pediatric Intensive Care Physician and Acting Assistant Dean for Student Affairs of Temple Campus, Lori Wick, in conjunction with Brian Gavron, MD. Wick is the President of the Texas A&M Chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS).

The Pete & Erin Huttlinger Series on Humanities in Medicine is made possible by funding from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, Texas A&M College of Medicine, and Baylor Scott & White Healthcare. Pete Huttlinger, an internationally acclaimed musician, was the inaugural speaker for this series in November 2015. His presentation, titled, “Don’t Just Live, Live Well,” was an inspiring exploration of how Pete and his wife, Erin, strived together to live a life of resiliency as they faced years of life-threatening complications from Pete’s end-stage heart failure resulting in the implantation of a Ventricular Assist Device (VAD). Through determination, love and laughter, Pete was able to relearn to play guitar and resume a rigorous touring and recording schedule and even walk a half-marathon just 12 months later. Pete died from a stroke on January 15, 2016.

The GHHS and the Arnold P. Gold Foundation promote compassion and the humanities in medicine at medical schools and hospitals across the country. The purpose of The Pete & Erin Huttlinger Series on Humanities in Medicine is to help physicians, healthcare professionals, and medical students ignite and rekindle their passion for medicine and compassionate patient care through a series of programs that feature presenters with extraordinary stories of inspiration and resiliency, told in formats that incorporate the arts, ethics and humanities. These are not simply stories of patients who have overcome medical health challenges but will be messages and themes of the resiliency of the human spirit, the inter-connectedness of our relationships beyond doctor-patient relationships, and the deeper collection of experiences we all share.
